Moms, we love our kids, but sometimes we just need more than 8 seconds of silence. I thought it was postpartum depression sinking in after the birth of my second child, but instead it was just a deep-rooted need to have two consecutive complete thoughts without interruption. Body & Soul Spa gave that to me.
Located in Queens Harbor in Surfside Beach, off Highway 17 South, Body & Soul Spa offers services ranging from a five-minute eyebrow wax to synchronized massages, featuring two sets of hands on you at all times for nearly an hour.
Everything about Body & Soul is beautiful, beginning with the front door. After you check-in, you’re escorted back to the locker room, which is very bright and spacious. Best of all, it’s amazingly clean. Inside the locker room are lockers, benches, restrooms, showers, and a private changing area. Depending on your treatment, you’re typically given a generously sized robe and flip-flops.
Before your treatment, you’re led to a quiet relaxation area. From there you will be fetched and brought to a treatment room, which are all, also, beautiful. Most are dimly lit, depending on your treatment. There’s always soothing, soft music playing and wonderful herbal smells. The environment is very pleasing.
Over the past six years, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing a variety of treatments. Massages are typically my favorite and I’ve indulged in the Customized Body Massage, Aromatherapy Massage, and Sacred Stone Massage. Without question, my favorite is Sacred Stone. I hate to be cold, and the rocks used are about two degrees away from burning you and feel amazing.
In the skin therapy choices, I’ve had the Custom Organic Facial and Deluxe Spa Facial. The latter is a bit more expensive but very much worth it. It includes a lovely massage of the shoulders, hands, and feet. If you’re coupling your facial with a massage of any variety, go with the Custom Organic Facial. If you’re trying to get the most for your dollar, skip the two treatments and just do the Deluxe Spa Facial. It’s heaven!
My biggest splurge at Body & Soul Spa was the Fruit Scrub & Herbal Mud Wrap. The treatment took approximately two hours and I left there with glowing, smooth skin. The treatment starts with a literal scrub under a warm shower and finishes with a massage. I loved it, but I’m not sure I would do it again. The table on which you get the scrub is hard since it gets wet and there is a period of extreme cold. In all fairness, I was warned there would be an icy moment coming up when the humidity tent was removed and every effort was made for it to be as quick as possible. It was, indeed, quick, but not pleasant. Matters not, five minutes later I was in a different room, on a soft table, completely warm and getting a massage for the second half the treatment.
Beyond the treatments, let me tell you a few things I love about Body & Soul. First, it’s a stand-alone spa. Have you ever gotten a massage in a hair salon? It’s not very relaxing if you have to listen to a hair dryer and conversations while having your back rubbed. The atmosphere at Body & Soul is very quiet and peaceful – something I greatly appreciate.
I love the fact that you can be as modest as you’d like. Some people like to go into a massage nude. Others want to be covered. Those two and everything in between is acceptable. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a massage by a male there, but even then I was never uncomfortable. There is an obvious focus, by all staff members, to make the client comfortable and at ease, whether you’re modest or have uncertainty or questions about a treatment. That’s so important to me, and I’m sure others, as well.
Body & Soul has been a place where my mom and I enjoy some time away together. Gift certificates are often found under our Christmas tree and we’re never disappointed. It’s perfect whether you go there with a loved one (they offer couples massages!), friend, or alone.
