It was January 2011 that MyrtleBeachforFamilies.com was born. I’ve never publicly told the story, but I was prompted to start it as a result of being laid off from another online community job I held. The site is fantastic, but the company is in California and they decided they wanted someone in the office. That’s when it hit me. I really wanted to spend more time writing and more time doing something that was an investment in our community.
When we moved here in 2003, I was a mom of an 8 month-old and knew no one. It was an online community, one that I still work for and love, that connected me with a few women – one who is still a friend today. Still, I felt isolated. At the time, I was a stay-at-home mom and had no idea where to start learning what this new area had to offer and how to make friends. At times, it felt like a rough road.
After being laid off, I was talking to my husband one night about how there are no sites I knew of in the Grand Strand purely for the families with children living here. I’ve since learned there is another, but it was with the encouragement of my husband saying, “Well write one!” that pushed me to begin.
During the past year I’ve written 90 posts and was visited by nearly 8000 folks. My goal for 2012 is to well surpass those numbers. I’m hopeful everyone that reads my blog will want to share it with someone they think will find it helpful. I want to be an even bigger resource for Grand Strand families. My last wish for 2012 is that what I’m writing gets moms (and dads) talking to each other. I’ve worked in online communities for the past eight years. I’ve participated in them for no less than 12 years. I know how much they’ve shaped my experiences and I want that for Grand Strand parents. I never want another family to move here and feel stressed about how to get started.
Thank you very much for visiting and reading. I’d love for you to subscribe, like me on Facebook, and follow me on Twitter. I’d also love for you to talk to me. Tell me what you and your family want to read. Ask the questions that are on your mind. Post on my Facebook wall or tweet me. If I don’t have the answer, other parents reading may.
It’s been an honor writing this blog and I’m looking forward to a fantastic 2012!
