The Grand Strand Optimist Club is hosting a Bike Rodeo and safety event this Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the First Presbyterian Church at 3810 Robert Grissom Parkway in Myrtle Beach.
The day will include bike safety inspections and instruction, an autocross course, and the Myrtle Beach Police and Fire Departments on hand to answer questions and provide information. There will be free pizza and refreshments, and all children attending will get a free bike helmet! You can read more about the event here.
While a bike is part of almost every childhood, the statistics of head injury, and even death as a result of it, are staggering. The numbers don’t lie. According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, in 2010 there were 626 bicycle deaths. Of those, 429 were not wearing helmets and 94 were. There is an additional 93 that had no report of whether or not they were wearing a helmet.
