Scentsy warmers and scented wax!

I’m a sucker for a good candle.  Smelling citrus in the summer, apples in the fall, cinnamon in the winter, and flowers in the spring makes me happy.  Until recently, I was unfamiliar with the Scentsy brand.  It’s a home fragrance company that offers warmers and scented wax that melts.  For two reasons this is better than candles.

1) Candles can pose a danger. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, “candles cause an estimated 15,600 fires in residential structures, 150 deaths, 1,270 injuries, and $539 million in estimated direct property damage each year.”  You can learn more scary statistics and safety tips here.

2) Switching out fragrances requires separate candles, which take up room and is expensive.  If you saw the bottom of my china cabinet, you’d understand.  I’ve got pillar candles, jars, tea lights, and tarts piled high.

With Scentsy, the scented wax is melted with a 25 watt bulb, which lives in the bottom of the warmer.  The heat emitted is low and the fire risk is even lower.  The unit plugs into an outlet and has an on/off switch.

What I love is that when you switch out scents, all you have to do is melt what’s in the warmer and pour it back into the container.  The warmer can be a permanent piece of decor in your home.  Better yet, the scented wax is inexpensive and compact.

The warmer I got is Contenta.  I chose it because it is neutral, though Scentsy has many beautiful styles.  The waxes I chose were Sunkissed Citrus and Flirtatious. I popped the wax out of the container and put two small cubes in the warmer.  Within minutes, my house started to fill with the wonderful smell of oranges.  For fun, I dumped that wax back into the container and put a few Flirtatious cubes in.  It took no time, wasn’t messy, and voila, a new scent.

When I had the warmer in my kitchen the fragrance seemed a little strong, however that’s likely because it was, quite literally, right under my nose.  When I moved the warmer to my dining room, which is open to a bigger area, it was absolutely perfect. Christie also mentioned that the strength of the scent relates to the number of cubes you put in the warmer.  For less scent, put fewer cubes in.

I now love Scentsy so much that I’m going to give one lucky reader a mid-sized warmer and bar of scented wax of her choice.  All you have to do is look through the current catalog and leave a comment on this post (no posts on Facebook or Twitter will count as entries) telling us which warmer is your favorite and the scent you’d put in it.  One comment will be selected at random as the winner.

To be eligible you can only enter one time and must provide a valid email address (which will not be displayed) so I can contact you if you win.  The contest runs from Monday, August 6, 2012 to noon on Friday, August 10, 2012.  If you are the winner and do not respond to email notification within 72 hours, another winner will be chosen.

    • Soy candles burn claneer and don’t have health hazardous carcinogens. Any craft store like ac moore or michael’s will have your supplies. It’s very simple and enjoyable, they make unique and always appreciated gifts but it doesn’t save much money. by the time you purchase scented oils etc. you will have spent a pretty penny.

  12. Laurie Suprano says:

I like the Montauk with “Ocean”

  13. My favorites in the catalog are Claremont and Montauk. We have a vacation home in North Myrtle Beach and love spending time there! We also rent our home, and the plug in warmers are much safer than the candle kind – I would be at ease knowing anyone can enjoy a beautiful, welcoming scent without the worry that candles will be left burning or accidentally knocked over. I would choose scents that compliment the beach like Rio Beach, Ocean or Beach scents.

    • If you live anywhere near South Deerfield, Massachusetts, go to Yankee Candle’s froctay store’s clearance room. Great candles, lower price if you don’t mind Halloween or Christmas color candles in March. To make candles without all the initial expenditure, try taking a candle making class at a craft school, store, youth or senior citizen center. Or ask around for anyone willing to lend you or rent you equipment. Yard sales and thrift stores, if checked regularly, might reveal some finds. I’ve never made scented candles, but Crayola crayons are much cheaper to melt and use for making colors. The process that needs the least equipment is dipping. However, dipped candles require the most time investment. DO NOT USE COOKING UTENSILS YOU PLAN TO USE AGAIN FOR FOOD PREPARATION! #10 and #5 cans on a hot plate with temperature control or used in a double-boiler method are a cheap way to go. Buy a good quality of wick. Plain string leaves much to be desired.

    • I would suggest you start bnuiyg used candles from your local garage sales cheaply and haggle on prices.Separate the ones that have scent from the ones that don’t,also colors.Use a double boiler to melt the wax slowly and pour into your vessels. The only thing i would suggest you buy new is the cotton string.Tie a washer or a small rock to one end insert it into the vessel pour wax.Try different mediums such as leaves, rocks, sand, coins, sticks on the outside of the candle.Use the hot wax to make them stick.
