In December I wrote about the Grand Strand Running Club 5K training class. I don’t know what possessed me but I signed up and am running my first race this weekend. It’s been an experience that took me so far beyond my expectations, I can barely put it into words.
The class had three groups – walk, walk/run, and run. Participants started where they were most comfortable and focused on increasing their fitness and decreasing their times, no matter where they started. I wouldn’t have thought I was capable, but I’m running! When I do the 5K on Saturday, I will be running about 2/3 of it and walking the rest. For those who are more fit than I am, that doesn’t seem like a big deal, but for me…it is, indeed, a big deal! 🙂
I feel like a walking commercial for this class. The support and knowledge shared by the coaches was priceless. There was zero judgement and tons of encouragement. If you were ever thinking about taking something like this on, this class taught me how to go about it safely and at a good pace that was challenging but not over-the-top.
After much begging and whining by the participants (which is a good sign) the club is offering a second session. It’s six weeks long, with five classes (one week off for Easter). It’s preparation for the Diva 5K in North Myrtle Beach on April 28th or Blue Crab 5K in Little River on May 11th. They’re also doing a special session for those working on the Diva Half Marathon.
The cost is $10 for club members and $20 for non-members – which is a good deal since it includes club membership for one year. You can learn more and register here. I’m already signed up. Care to join me?
