I’m ever struck when I hear stories of others’ struggles. Hunger, poverty, illness, abuse, struggle… There are so many truly worthy causes of donation and effort. Let me him a few that touch me.
Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children dealing with a serious or terminal illness. When I have the opportunity to donate to them, I do. The parents benefiting are living my worst nightmare. They’ve had to watch their child suffer and would likely give anything to see them smile. Make-A-Wish coordinates an experience for the family that does its very best to take the physical issues away, if even just for the day. They strive to bring smiles and grant a wish.
Kidds’ Kids, founded by the late radio personality Kidd Kraddick, takes seriously and terminally ill children and their families, to Disney World. They ask for donations from listeners just one day a year. This past year they raised over $400,000 and 25 families will be making the trip.
Help4Kids is a Grand Strand-based charity that provides school supplies and food for needy children in Horry County. Every time I hear the statistics I want to cry. So many kids are experiencing food insecurity. Each Friday, volunteers from Help4Kids, deliver bags of non-perishable food to area schools for distribution. The food is to supplement the child through the weekend until he or she can get back to school for breakfast and lunch at school on Monday. For all of those working to provide for those in need, in any way, I’m thankful. That includes people writing checks, people couponing for the purpose of donating their free items (my awesome sister-in-law), photographers who take pictures of adoptable dogs so they’ll have a better chance of getting adopted, businesses who agree to sponsor fundraising events…I could go on and on. Thank you!
