Before anyone rolls their eyes at this post, let me disclaim it by saying I know it’s irrational to list this as a shining moment, but when I saw the topic, it was the first thing that came to mind.
When I had my first daughter, I had a failed epidural. When I had my second, I didn’t even bother. It was half fueled by the bill I had to pay for something that was totally ineffective and half motivated by the rate of progress I was experiencing. Still, after it was all done, I kept saying, “I did it. I really did it. No pain meds. Wow. I really, really did it.”
There was no medal and moms who had multiple levels of medically supported pain relief are just as motherly as I. But if you’re thinking about attempting birth without meds, I am going to be your biggest cheerleader.

Ha! I had 4 that way, including my third who was pulled out with help forceps, and still no epidural. Best part? Being able to stand up and shower within an hour or two after giving birth and feeling great, immediately! 🙂 I will cheer anyone on who births babies, whichever way they do it. But yes, women CAN do without!
I love it, Dorien! The other thing I always tell expecting moms is to prepare for a non-medicated birth regardless if you plan to get an epidural or not. Sometimes your body and baby have other plans!
